Meal Prep & Snack Ideas for University Students

October 21, 2023

1. Prepare as Much as Possible

In addition to making meals you can eat later, prepare some foods ahead of time. For instance, you could wash, peel, and cut up vegetables or split large bags of snacks into smaller portions to grab when you’re on the go. Aim to do these tasks whenever you have several minutes to spare.

2. Keep Your Kitchen Organized

Grocery shopping can be tiring, meaning you may want to rest when you come home from the store. However, it’s worth putting everything away first. This is extra important for foods that need to go in the refrigerator or freezer, but storing all your other foodstuffs in the right places is useful for keeping your kitchen organized. This will help you see at a glance what you have and what items you need to add to your shopping list.

3. Store Food in Clear Containers

Another tactic that will help you see what food you have at home is to store  things in clear containers or bags. This is ideal for storing chopped fruits and vegetables in the freezer to make them last longer.

4. Reuse Ingredients in Different Recipes

Come up with several ways to use a particular ingredient, such as a certain type of meat, fish, or vegetable. The benefit of this is you can buy in bulk (which is often less expensive), but you won’t become bored of eating the same meal every night for a week. Plus, you’ll avoid food waste when you only have a small amount of the ingredient left over after making your main dish.

5. Stock Up on the Basics

Make sure you always have basics you can use for many different meals and snacks. What these are will depend on your personal tastes, but they’ll likely include bread, rice, cereal, peanut butter, eggs, cheese, milk, and granola bars. To make recipes more interesting, you should also have spices like seasoning, garlic powder, and paprika.

6. Use These Healthy Snack Ideas

There’s no reason for healthy snacks to be boring. If you’re stuck for ideas, try:

  • Nuts
  • Cheese and crackers
  • Slices of fruit like apples and pears
  • Celery sticks with peanut butter
  • Pita chips and hummus
  • Pretzels
