A Roundup of the Best Study Tips from Social Media

June 3, 2023

1. Create a Study Schedule

Figuring out what to do as you go along will almost definitely mean you fall behind and need to pull an all-nighter. At the start of every semester, add all your due dates to your planner and assign time in your schedule to studying for each class.

Sticking to a study schedule will mean you never suffer the stress of realizing you can’t finish by the deadline unless you cancel all your other commitments. Just make sure you always give yourself more time than you think you’ll need. In the best case scenario, you’ll finish early and be able to hang out with friends or relax instead.

2. Have Study Partners

There are multiple ways to benefit from a study partner. For instance, you could hold each other accountable, share notes when one of you is unable to make it to class, or do homework together. It’s also worth joining study groups for your classes where you discuss ideas, practice for quizzes, and ensure you’ve all understood the material.

3. Explain Concepts to Others

One of the best ways to learn is by explaining concepts to someone else. Find anyone who is willing to listen — members of your study group, your roommates, even your parents when you talk on the phone. It’s particularly useful to imagine you’re answering an exam question. If you’re explaining to someone who hasn’t studied the class, you may need to give significant background information, which is even better for ensuring you’ve understood.

4. Ask Whenever You’re Uncertain

Never feel intimidated when there’s something you don’t understand. Ask questions in class or reach out to your professor later via email or during office hours. You can also ask other students, such as during your study group sessions. The important thing is you do clear up any doubts to ensure you’re able to receive the best possible grades.

5. Use Extra Resources

Experiment with a variety of study tools until you figure out what best helps you retain knowledge. Visual learners may like to create mind maps, whereas students who find it difficult to concentrate for long periods should try a pomodoro timer or apps that incentivize them to stay focused. Other useful tools include flashcards, educational videos to help you grasp key concepts, and study guides.

Another important study tip is to have a great student apartment where you can study in peace. For Niagara College off-campus housing, there’s Regent. As well as studying in your fully-furnished bedroom (which comes with a desk and chair), you can study in our community room, where you’ll be around like-minded students.
