A Guide to Finding the Best Remote Work Opportunities

March 17, 2024

Use the Right Search Terms

There are many ways an employer may advertise a job as remote. Some common terms include “flexible,” “work from home,” “work from anywhere”, and “virtual.” Make sure you search for all these to avoid missing anything.

Check the Whole Job Post

Some jobs are listed as remote but are actually hybrid. The employer may expect you to work on site just a couple times a year or as often as once a week. If you’re able to fit a visit to the office into your schedule, this may not be a problem. However, it’s important to consider if this will interfere with your other commitments (such as your classes) before you apply.

Ask If Remote Work Is a Possibility

Some jobs may not specify if they’re remote, in person, or hybrid. If it’s possible to perform all the duties from any location, the employer may be willing to let you work remotely — the only way to find out is to ask.
Be aware that the employer may ask you why you want to work remotely, meaning you’ll need to have some good answers prepared.

For instance, you could mention how you need to fit work around your studies, that you feel you’ll be more productive working from home, or that remote work will lead to better job satisfaction, meaning you’ll produce higher-quality work.

Avoid Scams

Unfortunately, many so-called remote jobs are actually scams. If a job seems too good to be true, walk away. This includes jobs that pay far too much for an entry-level position (they may even claim unlimited earning potential), jobs in reshipping or secret shopping, and anything that offers quick cash. Other red flags include jobs that require you to make an investment upfront, receiving an offer without ever talking to someone at the company, and positions that require you to attend an investment seminar. If you’re unsure, research the company to check if it’s legitimate.

Work with a Recruiter

To avoid needing to scour job sites yourself, work with a recruiter. You can request that the recruiter only lets you know about remote jobs that also match your other preferences.

When working remotely, it’s extra important to have a quiet place at home where you can focus as well as a fast internet connection. You’ll find apartments near Brock University that are ideal for remote work at Regent. Your bedroom is fully furnished with everything you need (including a desk) and features an electronic lock on the door. Plus, rent includes high-speed WiFi in addition to other utilities and use of the onsite gym. Set up a tour to check out the facilities for yourself.
