7 Ideas for Exploring Your University Town

July 18, 2023

However, don’t neglect to explore farther afield — most university towns have a wide range of interesting places for students. Grab a few friends and check out some of the highlights.

1. Try New Restaurants

If you’re not in the mood to cook but are becoming bored of the same old options on campus, search for a new restaurant in your university town. Even better, see if you can find cuisine you’ve never tried before — after all, university is all about new experiences. Use the opportunity to catch up on the latest gossip with a good friend, get to know your roommate better, or go on a date.

2. Search for Opportunities for Outdoor Adventures

The majority of your university activities may involve spending time indoors, but it’s important to get some sunlight on a regular basis. Find a local park you can go to whenever you need some fresh air or search for spots for weekend excursions where you can go hiking or biking. If you don’t have your own bike, find out if it’s possible to rent one for a few hours.

3. Take a Fitness Class

It can be more motivating to take fitness classes than to hit the gym on your own. If your university doesn’t offer anything, look off campus for opportunities. You’ll stay fit, meet locals, and destress from your academics.

4. Attend Club Meetings Off Campus

Search for clubs at your university that hold some of their meetings off campus. As well as the chance to explore your surroundings, this is a great way to meet new people and expand your social circle.

5. Check Out the Businesses on Main Street

An activity you must do at least once while you’re at university is take a walk down main street. There’s likely a number of interesting businesses to discover — from restaurants and movie theaters to ice cream shops and thrift stores. You may even find spots you want to return to often.

6. Attend Community Events

Stay in the loop about big events happening in town. Carnivals and holiday festivals are often free to attend, are lots of fun, and will help you feel like you belong to the community.

7. Sign Up for Volunteer Opportunities

If you want to give back, research whether your university has any volunteer programs you could join. You should be able to find something that matches your interests, perhaps even your career goals.

You’re more likely to spend time off campus if you live in an apartment rather than a dorm. An alternative to Brock University residence is Regent. You’ll be living in a great part of town in a community with other students but you’ll have your own space. Plus, you can take advantage of the shuttle service that goes to campus every day and to grocery stores once a week. Alternatively, bring your own car and leave it in our underground parking lot. Book a tour to check out our housing for yourself.
