Fitness Tips for Busy Students

July 14, 2024

1. Schedule Your Workout Early in the Day

If you decide to exercise late in the day, you risk reaching bedtime and realizing you never had the chance to work out. For instance, you may receive a surprise invitation for an event in the evening and have no time to exercise. By scheduling your workouts in the morning, you’re making fitness a priority. Plus, the exercise will energize you and put you in the right frame of mind for your classes and other activities.

2. Use Your Free Time for Fitness

If early classes make it impossible for you to fit in a workout first thing in the morning, find opportunities to exercise when you have time to kill. Breaks between classes are ideal because physical activity makes your blood flow and improves your concentration.

Even 20 minutes or less is enough for a workout, especially if you make it high intensity. For instance, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) involves practising a series of exercises in short bursts with even shorter intervals of rest in between. For example, you could do an exercise for 45 seconds, take a 15-second rest, and then repeat with a different exercise. You can do this with pushups, jump squats, mountain climbers, lunges, burpees, and other movements that bring up your heart rate. Create a sequence to follow and run through the exercises two to five times.

3. Stay Active Throughout the Day

Rather than covering all your fitness requirements in a single training session each day, develop a more active lifestyle. This will help you see greater benefits. There are many easy ways to increase your physical activity, including walking or cycling instead of taking public transit, choosing the stairs over an elevator, and using a break for a stroll in the park.

4. Find a Fitness Buddy

Asking a friend to work out with you will hold you accountable. You’re less likely to skip a day if you know your friend is waiting for you to go for a jog, hit the gym, or go biking.

5. Join Group Classes

Another way to incentivize yourself to work out is to take group classes. Find out if there are any fitness classes taking place on campus. Try out different ones to figure out what you enjoy the most.

When you only have limited time, it’s ideal if you can exercise in your apartment. You’ll find a spacious room for rent near Niagara College at Regent. Your fully-furnished suite is perfect for bodyweight exercises or stretches to break up a study session. Plus, when you want a proper workout, there’s no need to go further than the onsite gym.
