1. The Right Number of Bedrooms
To start, think about who you’d like to ask to be your roommates. You should choose people you can trust and who have a similar lifestyle to you, such as in terms of their study and socialization habits, how clean they like to have their home, and their financial situation. Once you know how many roommates you’ll have, you can search for apartments with an appropriate number of bedrooms.
Of course, if you find a great place with one more bedroom than you need, you can always search for more roommates on social media. You could even find all your roommates this way. Alternatively, you could look for a room for yourself in off-campus student housing and you’ll be matched with roommates.
2. An Affordable Price
Calculate your budget and don’t even consider accommodation that costs more than this. Bear in mind that rent won’t be your only housing expense — you may need to pay for utilities separately and the security deposit is likely to be an extra month’s rent.
3. Proximity to Campus
Figure out how you’ll reach campus from your apartment. It may be within walking or biking distance or you may need to take a bus or to drive. If you’re using public transit, find out the location of the nearest stop and the bus timetable. If you have your own car, research options (and costs) for parking — both near your apartment and on campus.
4. A Safe Atmosphere
Student housing is sometimes in undesirable neighbourhoods. If possible, walk around the area to see how it feels. Another option is to do some research online or ask students who have lived in the neighbourhood in the past about their experiences. Also, make sure the building seems secure by asking about locks on the doors and windows and security cameras.
5. Appealing Amenities
Housing aimed at students often has great amenities. Look out for perks that will improve the experience, such as furnishings, plenty of bathrooms, and a fitness centre on site. It’s even better if your housing makes it easier for you to succeed with your classes with amenities like study areas and free WiFi.
